For parents

Why Won't My Child Listen?

It can feel like your child is choosing not to listen, when often something else entirely is going on. This workshop looks at attention, developmental stage, transitions and sensory needs as common reasons instructions do not land the way we expect. You will come away with a clearer sense of what is realistic to expect at your child's age and practical ways to communicate that actually get through.

Led by Amy Byrne — BA (Hons) Level 8 in Early Childhood Education and Care, currently studying a Level 9 postgraduate in play therapy, Children First trained and a Mandated Person. One hour, with a take-home booklet and a dated certificate of attendance.

Who this is for

Parents and carers of children aged two to eight who feel like they are repeating themselves constantly without much change in response.

What we cover in the hour

  • How attention span at different ages affects a child's ability to follow instructions.
  • The role of transitions in causing apparent non-compliance.
  • How sensory needs or overstimulation can interfere with listening.
  • Realistic expectations for what a child can genuinely process and remember.
  • Communication techniques that increase the chance of being heard.
  • The difference between a child who cannot comply and one who will not.

What you'll leave with

  • A guide to realistic attention spans by age.
  • Three communication techniques that reduce repeated instructions.
  • A checklist for identifying whether transitions are the real issue.
  • A short note on distinguishing genuine difficulty from resistance.
  • A take-home booklet with instruction-giving scripts that work with, not against, development.

Inside the booklet

The booklet includes an attention-span reference by age, transition-support scripts, and a checklist for identifying underlying causes of non-compliance.

This session is grounded in the Aistear theme of Wellbeing and Communicating, recognising that a child's ability to respond depends on developmental readiness as much as on the way instructions are given.

Common questions

Is my child ignoring me on purpose?
It can certainly feel that way, but very often something developmental, sensory or transition-related is getting in the way rather than deliberate defiance. This workshop helps you tell the two apart so your response actually fits the situation.
How many times should I repeat an instruction before taking action?
We cover how repeating instructions too many times often trains children to wait for the fifth or sixth request rather than the first. The session includes specific techniques for giving an instruction once, clearly, in a way more likely to land.
Does this apply to instructions given at school or preschool too?
Yes, the underlying principles around attention and transitions apply across settings, and educators often find this content useful for classroom management as well as parents at home.
My child listens to their teacher but not to me. Why?
This is very common and usually relates to context, routine and the different relationship dynamic in each setting rather than a reflection of your parenting. We discuss why this happens and how to bring some of that structure home.
Could my child's non-compliance be linked to something else, like anxiety?
It can be, and we touch on this briefly, though our supporting an anxious child workshop goes into more depth if you think anxiety might be the underlying driver rather than attention or transitions.
