Síolta explained: what quality looks like day to day

Síolta asks 'how good is this setting?'. Aistear asks 'what is this child learning, and how do we support it?'. Most settings use both: Síolta to reflect on environment, relationships and practice, Aistear to shape curriculum and planning.

Síolta sets out standards covering areas such as rights of the child, environments, parents and families, interactions, play, curriculum, transitions and identity and belonging. The full standards are published on the Síolta website.

Pick one standard a month rather than auditing everything at once. Read the signposts for reflection with your team, then walk the room together and look for evidence — not paperwork evidence, but what a visiting child would actually experience.

Involve the whole team, including relief staff. Quality lives in the hundreds of small interactions that happen when the manager is not in the room.

Keep a short written note of what you changed and why. That single habit turns reflection into visible improvement.

Environments that look tidy but offer little choice. If everything is on a high shelf, children cannot make decisions about their own play.

Parent partnership reduced to a noticeboard. Two-way conversation — even brief, genuine daily exchanges — is what the standard is reaching for.

Transitions treated as logistics. Arrivals, nappy changes, mealtimes and moving rooms are relationship moments, and children feel the difference.
